JULY 2016 - South Africa: on July 20th the 685 MW AVON Power Plant started commercial operation.

The plant is part of the “Peaker Power Projects” promoted by the South-African Ministry of Energy and awarded to the consortium led by GDF, of which FATA and Ansaldo Energia are part. Such project, which involved the "turn-key" implementation of two plants for the production of electric power by an independent producer, was born on the initiative of the Energy Department of the South-African Government to enhance and improve the energy distribution network.

The first power plant, the 342 MW DEDISA, became operational in Port Elizabeth in 2015. The AVON plant - developed in Durban - is the second one within the framework of the project. The electrical power generated shall be sold for 15 years to the South African Electric Power Provider (ESKOM) on the basis of a sales agreement.

In developing both power plants, special attention has been paid to the return in terms of employment for the local community and to the environment; two themes the African country is particularly sensitive to.

AVON and DEDISA are the first two "independent" turbogas plants developed in South-Africa and have strategic relevance for the Country: they will contribute to stabilize the South-African power grid and - mainly - the load peaks.

Once again, the acceptance of this second plant is a reason of pride for our company, which is thanking the whole team who have worked on the project with commitment and dedication, and - in particular, the engineers: Italo Ballestrelli – Project Director, Carlo Brunatto – Power Engineering Manager, Elisa Prato - Project Manager, Cristian Frisoni - Site Manager and Raffaele Orlando – Project Engineer.

In its letter of Plant Acceptance (COE), the client has seized the opportunity to manifest its appreciation for the activities developed by FATA (document enclosed)

A suggestive night shot of the power plant has been taken by means of a drone. You will find hereinafter the link to see the film “Avon Peaking Power Plant by night”.
